Clean Stainless Steel with Vinegar and Oil
All you need is a spray bottle, a soft cloth (microfiber is best), white vinegar, and olive oil:
Clean Stainless Steel Appliances with Dish Soap and Baby Oil
If you don't have a special cleaner on hand for your stainless steel, or you're not interested in spending money on special cleaners, Instructables user amalkhan suggests two things you may have already: baby oil and dish soap.
The key to this method first is to find the grain of your stainless steel—it's something a lot of people don't think about, especially if you have a specialized cleaner for stainless steel on-hand, but it's important—a quick look at the surface of your fridge or stove will show you which direction you should clean to get the best results. He also suggests getting a good lint-free cotton cloth, but paper towels will work in a pinch (if you don't mind brushing away the lint afterwards).
Then it's simple—just a dab of dish soap, a little water, and clean along the grain to get rid of oil marks, smudges, or stubborn fingerprints. As long as you're cleaning with the grain, you shouldn't leave ugly streaks or water marks. Then, repeat the process with the baby oil to polish. Simple as that. Personally, I tend to use a little Barkeeper's Friend on my appliances, but this is a one-two method worth trying if I'm out of the stuff or want something to add a little shine as well as clean. All you need is a spray bottle, a soft cloth (microfiber is best), white vinegar, and olive oil:
- Find the direction of the grain. You'll see it going horizontally or vertically.
- Spray the white vinegar on the surface liberally. Then wipe it down with your cloth going the direction of the grain.
- Dip the soft cloth into the olive oil—not too much—and polish your appliance going in the direction of the grain.
